While seven channels of amplification may seem underwhelming in a high-end receiver, Arcam has determined that seven channels are the maximum number that can be built into a chassis without compromising performance, and thus adheres to that number across its receiver lineup. The validity of this philosophy is indeed borne out upon first playback of a highly detailed action scene from a well-mixed movie. With lesser receivers (regardless of channel count), isolated details can often smear or, worse, coalesce with atmospherics into a muddy blur. The AVR11, on the other hand, renders such scenes with uncanny realism, deftly separating individual sound effects, musical notes, and snippets of dialog into distinct sonic entities within the three-dimensional soundfield, even with only two height speakers.
With the AVR11 and four active subwoofers, you can power a formidable 5.4.2 immersive surround system right out of the box, using the receiver’s seven onboard channels and four of its preamp outs. Or you can route signals from the unit’s bevy of preamp outputs to external power amplifiers and run a massive 9.4.6 system — or larger! Arcam makes this easy with a range of matching multichannel amplifiers that include the 2-channel PA240, the 4-channel PA410, and the 7-channel PA720. The PA240 and the PA720 feature the same Class G amplification technology as Arcam’s flagship AVR31 receiver, while the PA410 employs Class AB circuits.
The AVR11 allows you to connect up to four active subwoofers via its Sub or Channel 13/14/15/16 outputs. Using multiple subs not only delivers more bass, but also a more balanced low-frequency response. It also relieves the stress placed on a single sub during playback of bass-heavy music and action sequences, so you’ll enjoy cleaner, more detailed bass.
