Leuchtenbergia principis RED-PINK FORM seeds grow into the agave cactus or prince's cactus — the only species in the monotypic genus Leuchtenbergia, native to the desert and dry shrubland biome of Mexico (Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas). The genus is named after Eugen de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg (1781–1824), stepson of Napoléon Bonaparte; the species epithet principis means 'of the prince' (from Latin). One of the most bizarre cacti in existence — the extremely long, angular tubercles (to 15 cm) resemble agave leaves, making it unmistakable. The RED-PINK FORM produces red to deep pink flowers rather than the typical pale yellow. Frost-tender.
