Highly unusual inherited pieces - I've not seen anything like them before so I've done lots of research to try to piece together a history.

They are silver - I looked up the hallmarks for Turkey.  Each bowl bears two marks.  One for the Sultan, the Tughra mark which was used up to 1923 and is on the coin in the middle, the other on the bowl is for the Turkish Republic 1923 onwards.

"Sultan's Tughra (calligraphic monogram, seal or signature).  Tughras served a purpose similar to the cartouche in ancient Egypt or the Royal Cipher of British monarchs. Every Ottoman sultan had his own individual tughra".

The plaque states the bowls were (presented from/to?) Atlas Club, Istanbul, 1989.  I've searched for the Atlas Club but have not found anything from Istanbul that seems relevant but such a gift would be important.

Each bowl has a coin set into the base and it seems to be double sided if you turn the bowl upside down - please see pictures - this coin bears the Sultan Tughra mark on the facing side of each bowl.

Beautiful patterns run around the inner and outer bowl and a Turkish Republic silver hallmark - looks like 800 HT.  I gave them a brief clean as I needed to see the details, pattern, coins and the hallmark for research,

photographs and to be sure there were no scratches or dents - this was recommended to ensure you are seeing the correct condition of the item.   It's really difficult to know what to do for the best.  If you want them to look pristine you can polish right up on receipt - I've wrapped them in non-acidic tissue paper.  You can probably research the actual coins as well which would date them to an exact pre-1923 period.

Hard presentation case in black velvet with red satin lining to the lid and red piping to the inner base.  Clip fasten - again, I gave it a brief shine and think this would polish up really nicely.

The two examples I've seen go for a small fortune - one bowl was on Etsy for £152 at time of writing!

I can't give you any more history than that really as I don't know the story of the bowls.

An item of real aesthetic, curiosity and historical value.
