Highlander Mech History:
The Highlander stands as one of the most iconic and enduring symbols of
martial prowess in the Inner Sphere, a testament to the engineering might of
the Terran Hegemony. Originally developed by the famed StarCorps Industries in
the late twenty-seventh century, the design represented the pinnacle of
battlemech technology of its era. Conceived as a heavy assault platform with
unparalleled survivability, the Highlander was intended to be a spearhead unit
capable of breaking enemy lines and holding critical defensive positions. Its
design philosophy centered on resilience and versatility, incorporating
advanced systems that were the envy of other manufacturers. The name itself
evoked a sense of rugged dependability and honor, traits that the mech would
embody throughout centuries of conflict. Initially, the design was highly
restricted, deployed only to elite Hegemony forces and a few select Star League
member states, adding to its mystique and reputation as a truly formidable
machine.
Following the collapse of the Star League and the onset of the Succession
Wars, the Highlander transitioned from a symbol of Terran dominance to a rare
and valuable asset in the fragmented Inner Sphere. The blueprints were lost to
the ravages of war, making existing models irreplaceable. The 'mech's survival
through this tumultuous period is a testament to its robust construction and
the dedication of the technical personnel who maintained these relics of a
golden age. The great houses fought bitterly over the remaining chassis, using
them as command 'mechs for high-value operations. Its presence on any
battlefield often dictated the outcome of an engagement, and stories of the
Highlander single-handedly turning the tide of battles became the stuff of
legend among 'mech pilots. This enduring legacy ensured that even as technology
regressed, the Highlander remained a premier assault 'mech.
The HGN-732 variant is perhaps the most famous and widely recognized
configuration of the chassis. It became the foundational model that set the
standard for the 'mech's capabilities and role. This variant established the
Highlander's reputation as a balanced machine, capable of engaging at various
ranges and adapting to different combat scenarios. Its durability and
command-and-control capabilities made it a favorite among high-ranking officers
who needed a reliable and imposing presence on the battlefield. While later
variants would introduce technological advancements, the 732 remains the
classic iteration, synonymous with the history and lineage of the entire
product line. It was the workhorse that carried the name through the darkest
periods of the Succession Wars, proving the timeless quality of the original
Star League design and ensuring the Highlander's place in military history.
The HGN-733 represented a significant evolution in the Highlander's
history, emerging during a later era when lost technologies began to reappear
across the Inner Sphere. This model was a substantial upgrade, incorporating
recovered Star League technology to enhance its capabilities significantly. The
introduction of advanced internal systems and refined armor materials allowed
the 733 to boast superior resilience and sustained performance compared to its
predecessor. This variant was a clear signal that the great houses were moving
past the technological dark ages, re-equipping their elite forces with superior
machines. The 733 quickly established itself as a premier assault 'mech, highly
sought after by mercenary units and house militaries alike. It built upon the
strong foundation of the 732, updating the design for a new generation of
warfare and ensuring the Highlander remained relevant and feared in the rapidly
changing technological landscape of the late third and early fourth Succession
Wars.
Over the centuries, the Highlander has transcended its origins as a mere
war machine to become a symbol of military heritage and engineering excellence.
Its journey from the elite forces of the Terran Hegemony to a prized relic in a
fragmented galaxy highlights its unique place in history. From the foundational
HGN-732 to the technologically advanced HGN-733, each variant tells a story of
adaptation, survival, and the enduring human desire for superior tools in the
face of conflict. The legacy of the Highlander continues to influence modern
'mech design and tactical doctrine, a true testament to the genius of its
original creators at StarCorps Industries. Its silhouette on the battlefield
remains a powerful and respected sight, ensuring that the legend of the Highlander
will persist for generations to come.
Alpha Strike Card Variants Included:
HGN-732:
The Highlander carries a weapons mix that is more at home when fighting a
ranged battle, but when the ranges close the Highlander has the right equipment
for the job. The primary weapon is an M-7 Gauss rifle that is capable of
stripping armor off of an enemy a ton at a time. The Gauss is backed up at long
ranges by a Holly-20 LRM-20 launcher. For close range work, it carries two
Harmon Starclass medium lasers and a Holly-6 SRM-6 launcher. Two tons of ammo
for the gauss rifle, LRM and SRM launchers each provide good endurance while
the use of CASE grants added protection. Low heat buildup from the weapons
allows for a nearly continuous barrage without taxing the twelve heat sinks,
though pilots must still exhibit caution.
HGN-733:
The 733 model is a downgrade of the Highlander, although it weathered the
use of more primitive technology better than other SLDF designs. In place of
the Gauss Rifle the 'Mech now carries an Mydron Class B Autocannon/10 with two
tons of ammo and an additional ton of LRM reloads while the rest of the
Highlander's weapons have remained the same. The armor has also been upgraded
by two tons, providing even more protection than the original 732 model. The
speed profile of the Highlander maintains the original model's maximum speed of
54.0 km/h. The communications system is a Hartford Com/A-7
