Description

The Richmond & Alleghany (R&A) Railroad was a short line along the James River in Virginia from Richmond to Lexington. It operated independently from 1880-1888. Much of its right-of-way was along the old James River canal towpath. This line was leased by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in 1888 and was later acquired by that line. Most of the route is still in service and operated by CSX Transportation.

Items from the R&A are very seldom found, but offered for auction is a freight receipt dated April 14, 1887. This receipt measures appx 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches and is printed on a light-weight paperstock. It is for a shipment of 16 pieces of pipe, and the shipping charge was $1.26. The shipment originated in Richmond, but I do not know the destination. Even for something now some 125 years old, is in very good condition. It has no rips, tears, spills or smears, and all writing/markings are from its use.

A fantastic item for any Virginia railfan.
