A beautifully preserved and unusually clean complete 9-volume set of the classic Wheatley edition of Pepys’s Diary, issued by Macmillan in their distinguished Bohn’s Libraries series. Bound in the publisher’s original dark blue pebbled cloth, with bright gilt titling to spines and the characteristic circular “History Library” emblem over “Bohn’s Libraries” at the foot. A striking and uniform shelf presentation.

Volumes are near fine, showing minimal shelf wear, tight and square text blocks, strong original endpapers, and clean interiors with no staining or intrusive foxing. Gilt is sharp. No ownership markings. A notably well-preserved example: most sets from this period show heavy rubbing or spine fading, but this one remains crisp and attractive.

The Wheatley edition was long considered the standard scholarly text of Pepys’s Diary before the 20th-century Latham & Matthews revision, and remains prized for its extensive notes, appendices, and textual fidelity. Macmillan’s Bohn’s Libraries printings are preferred by collectors for their durability, clarity of type, and refined Victorian-Edwardian design.
