Up for sale is an authentic antique square tablecloth, table cover, a festive and luxurious hand-made textile from the early 20th century. The entire piece is hand-sewn and made from hand-woven materials, featuring rich red velvet borders and a central seam joining the jacquard brocade panels. The back is lined with matching red cotton cloth.

The fabric itself is a superb example of natural silk brocade woven with gold metallic threads, producing beautiful shimmering and color-changing effects across its floral and foliate patterns. Brocade belongs to the family of jacquard-woven textiles known for their raised, elaborately patterned surfaces. While its appearance has remained consistent through history, the specific weaving techniques evolved greatly over time.

Historical Context (for reference)

Silk brocades with metallic gold thread—also known historically as “cloth of gold”—were among the most prestigious luxury fabrics in Europe from the Renaissance through the 19th century. They often featured complex floral motifs arranged in vertical repeating pattern stripes, similar to those seen in early Flemish and Burgundian art.

Comparable Renaissance textiles appear in paintings by Hans Memling (†1494), where richly patterned brocade garments with rosettes, stems, thistles, and chrysanthemum-like flowers symbolized high status and wealth. Such decorative conventions continued to influence European brocade design well into the 19th and early 20th century, and the present textile follows this long-standing aesthetic tradition.

Condition

The tablecloth is in excellent condition for its age, with no tears or repairs. Minor wear to the velvet border is consistent with age.

Because of the large size of the textile and the difficulty photographing it evenly, I have included several close-up photos of another smaller brocade sample made from the same type of fabric. These additional images are only for illustration to show the weave, texture, and metallic sheen.
