The image shows a card from the Republic of Bophuthatswana, a former Bantustan in South Africa during the apartheid era. Bophuthatswana was one of several "homelands" created by the white minority government for Black South Africans. It was declared a republic in 1977, but its independence was only recognized by South Africa. The territory was reincorporated into South Africa in 1994 after the end of apartheid.
