Up for sale is a luxury French walnut paperweight in a Medieval Revival style. Hand-made and artist-signed, it features a gilt brass medallion on the top and a calf-leather pad on the bottom. The artist’s signature is on the wooden rim, but it is hard to read—appears to be H. Marsal / Marzal. The medallion is a museum-inspired remake of a medieval example.

The original model is one of the earliest examples of champlevé enamel: glass powder placed into cells individually carved into a copper plate; after firing, the metal surface was gilded. The plaque is slightly domed. Its decoration, perfectly framed within the border, shows a winged dragon breathing flames or foliage, with a tail ending in a leafy scroll, all within a geometric border. The color palette contrasts with white and includes two shades of green and three shades of blue. It is comparable to medallions on the Casket of Abbot Boniface (c. 1110–1120) in the treasury of Conques.

Provenance: Found at an estate sale in Paris, France.

Condition: Excellent for its age; no chips, cracks, or damage.
