Manufacturer: Tefifon (Tefi-Werke), a German
company that operated primarily from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s.
The most distinctive feature is its cylindrical,
drum-like shape, often featuring wood veneer and a top surface (sometimes
glass or laminate) so it could double as a cocktail or side table. It
was designed to be a functional piece of furniture as well as a speaker. Its
drum or "tiki" look made it popular for recreational rooms, bars, and
lounges of the time.
The speaker itself was originally intended to be used with
the Tefifon audio system. a unique and now-obscure audio format that
competed with vinyl records in the 1950s and 60s. Instead of an open disc, it
used an endlessly looped reel of plastic tape (a cartridge, or
"Tefi") that had grooves cut into it, similar to a phonograph
record.
