Family Trainer: Tostugeki! Fuuun Takeshi Shiro is a game released in 1987 that is based on the Japanese game show Takeshi's Castle, which aired in the mid to late 1980's. There were a lot of variations of the show that was aired internationally throughout the years, like "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" (MXC for short) which aired in the United States. Although this is a Japanese show, Takeshi's Castle became a cult hit throughout the world.
The show itself includes the famous Japanese actor/comedian Takeshi Kitano, which he is also more commonly known as Beat Takeshi. His is the ruler of his castle and puts the contestants through various challenges to defeat him. Tostugeki! Fuuun Takeshi Shiro is basically a video game adaptation of the game show, but uses a floor pad called the Family trainer for controls.
With the use of the Family Trainer, this game is a physical activity game. The Family Trainer is known by several names outside of Japan. In the United States, it is known as the Power Pad. In Europe, it is known as Family Fun Fitness. This game is released only in Japan, so I will refer to the Japanese name for the floor pad in this guide.
When you choose the Individual or Team modes, you will be going through several castles. There are three smaller castles, with the bigger Takeshi's castle. The three smaller castles will have eight mini-games that you can play through to get points and items. The points that you get will act as health for Takeshi's castle, while the items that you find can be used to help conquer the castle. This means that you need to complete at least one of the smaller castles in order to go to Takeshi's castle, as you will have no health when you enter otherwise. I recommend that you complete all of the castles, in order to get as much health as possible.
The maximum amount of points you can get is 9990, which will be full health for Takeshi's castle. Keep this in mind when you are playing the game.
All of the castles will have a number on them. You select the castle by pressing that number on the Family Trainer - Side B. When you are about to start the game, remember to stand on the numbers 6 and 7 on the Family Trainer as this is the default position for most of the mini-games.
If you run out of time, you will fail the mini-game. If you are playing an individual game, you will move on to the next game. If you are playing a team game, you will move on to the next person on your team.
Note: If you are playing this game on an emulator with a keyboard, make sure your keyboard can handle at least four keys being pressed at the same time. This is required in order to play some of the mini-games. Keep in mind that if you are trying to jump, make sure you hit the buttons that makes you jump again in order to simulate you landing on the buttons. For example, you may press 6 and 7 at the same time to jump. You need to press 6 and 7 again in order to land, as this will simulate you landing on the Family Trainer after your jump.
All three of the smaller castles will have the same mini-games, just in a different order. The higher number castles will have more difficult versions of the mini-games, or will have different solutions. All of the items that you will get at the end of each castle will also be different.
When playing the game, your name (or team name if you are playing in a team competition) will be displayed at the bottom-left of the screen. Below that will be your current points, and below your points will be the time limit for the mini-game that you are currently playing.
The order of the mini-games of each castle will be listed here. When playing the game, you may refer to this list to help figure out which mini-game you are currently on.
