This volume, number 37, on the early versions of the Jagdpanzer IV, also known as the "Guderian Duck." This "tank," developed in 1942 by order of the Army Ordnance Office and commissioned by VOMAG, and first presented in 1944, was essentially a successor to the Sturmgeschütz. There were considerable efforts by the General of Artillery to retain the "Sturmgeschütz" designation. Guderian fought to ensure that the tanks were issued to the tank destroyer units of the Panzer divisions. Despite the inexperience of these tank destroyer units, the Jagdpanzer IV proved to be a formidable opponent for Allied anti-tank forces. This volume covers the early versions, from the Panzerjäger IV chassis number V2 to the light Panzerjäger IV equipped with the 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48. When we formulated the concept for this volume, we realized that we could only do justice to the historical information we had gathered by creating two volumes about one of the most important German tanks of the Second World War. Together with Volume 38, which is dedicated to the VOMAG and ALKETT versions with the 7.5 cm Pak 42 L/70 and the standardized chassis, all versions of this formidable vehicle will be included at the level of detail our readers have come to expect.
