Seiko Timegrapher P61 Tube Based Watch Timer Collectable / Restoration / Display

Overview

Vintage Seiko Timegrapher P61, an early electronic watch timing machine dating from the valve (vacuum tube) era. This is a complex piece of test equipment designed for regulating mechanical watches. Due to its age, it is sold strictly as a collectable, display item, or restoration project.

Condition and Safety Note

  • Physically in presentable vintage condition, showing normal age-related wear.
  • The rubber feet on the watch clamp have gone soft
  • Because of its age, it is not up to modern electrical safety standards.
  • There is no earth/ground cable fitted, which makes me uncomfortable powering it up.
  • I have not attempted to test or operate the machine, and it should be assumed untested.
  • After listing this I spotted some instructions online in pdf format which helpfully give some service instructions.

Technical Notes

The Timegrapher P61 uses tube amplification to detect and amplify the watch signal for output on a paper strip. While I do not understand the full internal operation, I have tested the valves individually because I have a tester:

  • Original Toshiba 12AX7 (x1), 12AU7 (x3), and 6X4: all test within specification.
  • 6BM8 (ECL82): good on the pre-amp section, weak on the power-amp section – easily and cheaply replaced if desired.
  • 2D21 thyratron: appears functional, though test procedure is somewhat uncertain.
  • There is also what appears to be a voltage stabiliser tube at the rear which I cannot test.

Suitability

Offered for collection, display, or restoration. It would make a good piece for a collection, a film or studio prop, or an enthusiast’s bench project. I suspect that more accurate semiconductor-based instruments are preferable if you actually wish to measure watches in service use, so this is just a collectable.

Summary

  • Seiko Timegrapher P61 – vintage valve-operated watch timer.
  • Sold as an untested collectable / display piece.
  • Contains Toshiba 12AX7, 12AU7, 6X4, 6BM8 (ECL82), 2D21, and a voltage stabiliser tube.
  • Interesting and uncommon Seiko laboratory instrument.
