Title: Santa Lucía (both panorama and engraving)
Description: Large lithographed foldout panorama
view of Santiago, Chile from the summit of Santa Lucia (Huelén Hill) plus a B&W
engraved view of Santa Lucía, both salvaged from a damaged copy of volume 1 of Lieut.
J.M. Gilliss’ The U.S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern
Hemisphere during 1849-’50-‘51-‘52. The foldout is based on photographs
taken from the hilltop. The sepia-tinted view sketches out the city below the
hilltop, viewed by two couples (one in European dress, and one in indigenous
clothing), colored by hand. Also colored in the foreground are two Chilean
flags. In the city, an American flag is visible, maybe at the location occupied
by the expedition.
Condition: The large foldout is in good
condition, brilliant color on mildly age-toned paper, a few spots of light
foxing, some creasing at folds, outside the image. The print is in poor
condition, with multiple water stains and scattered foxing.
Size: Foldout: approx. 55.0 x 11.5 |
Print: 9.0 x 11.5
