Titles: Sheets I, II, and III of “Map of
the Republic of Chile Compiled by the U.S. Astronl Expedition from
the Surveys of Messrs. Pissis & Allen Campbell, the Maps of Claude Gay
& unpublished Originals from the Archives of Santiago and from Astronomical
Determinations by the Expedition”, drawn by F. Herbst
Description: 3 large lithographed foldout maps comprising
all of Chile (undated) salvaged from a damaged copy of volume 1 of Lieut. J.M.
Gilliss’ The U.S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern
Hemisphere during 1849-’50-‘51-‘52. The three detailed maps cover the
entire territory of Chile from north to south. The Explanation panel on each
map shows roads, proposed railroads, and political divisions (provinces), but
also highlights mineral resources such as copper, gold, and silver, as well as
locations for ore processing.
Condition: The three sheets vary in condition,
but all three are good, dark impressions, with no tears, holes or the like.
Specifically: Sheet I is in very good condition, a bit darkened on the left
margin, one spot in the upper left area. Sheet II is in good condition, with
some scattered areas of ink transfer and orangish discoloration across panels.
Sheet III is in fair condition, the ink discoloration covers a greater
proportion of the map, and it has some creasing.
Size: Each foldout sheet: 11.75 x 18.75
