Vintage Handpainted Ceramic Tile – Signed by Marianna von Allesch (c.1940s–50s)
This is a striking mid-century ceramic wall tile by renowned artist Marianna von Allesch (1886–1972). Measuring approximately 9" wide x 10" tall x 3/8" thick, the tile features two stylized figures rendered in expressive brushwork and earthy tones. It is signed clearly on the front and includes a built-in hanging hole for wall display.
Estimated to have been created in the late 1940s to early 1950s, this piece reflects von Allesch’s signature style: asymmetrical, expressive, and modern, with a quiet emotional depth. The glaze over the right-hand figure (light blue shirt) has a slightly rough texture—likely original to the firing process and consistent with studio ceramic techniques of the period.
Von Allesch was a German-born artist celebrated for her work in ceramics, glass, painting, and textile design. After training under Bruno Paul and Adelbert Niemeyer at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin, she emigrated to the United States in 1928 and became a leading figure in avant-garde ceramic design. Her work was featured in major exhibitions and collected by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Princeton University Art Museum.
