Description
In 2000 500-drachma coins entered circulation for the first time although for a short period of time. The coins were the six curponickel commemorative coins dedicated to the 2004 Athens Olympics. The obverse, common in all six coins, was occupied by the Olympic emblem, the inscription AΘΗΝΑ 2004 (Athens 2004), the five Olympic rings and the denomination. Their reverse was accordingly occupied by the entrance (crypt) to the Ancient Olympia stadium, the Olympic winner Diagoras, baron de Coubertin and Vikelas, Spyros Louis, the Olympic Torch lighting ceremony in 2000 and lastly, a representation of an 1896 commemorative medal by Nikiforos Lytras.
