Excellent Ancestral Mask – Lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea

Collected In Situ, 1984 | Classic Curved Nose Form

Length 62 cm

This powerful mask originates from the Lower Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, an area renowned for its bold and expressive ceremonial art. Carved from a single piece of lightweight hardwood, it features the classic curved nose, a hallmark of ancestral masks from this region—symbolizing spiritual sensitivity and connection to the spirit world.

The mask likely represents an ancestral or protective spirit (waken or brag figure), and would have been used during initiation, mourning, or community rites. The strong sculptural lines, raised brow, and incised detail reflect the hand of a skilled village carver, working within a tradition passed down through generations.

This piece was collected in situ in 1984, and shows authentic signs of age and ritual use, including natural pigment traces and minor erosion consistent with ceremonial handling.
