DROUGHT IN SAHELTEN AFRICA
CARD NOTICE
By
Yveline PONCET, Geographer
The three cards that make up this document are desti-
Born to put in their geographical place the elements of documentation and information that are related to the current drought. They concern the six countries of the African Sahel, which are most affected: Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Haute-Volta, Niger, Ichad.
The elements that should be identified in a study
Hydro-agricultural are set up there: distribution of the population
Tion, water resources and their use, consequences of the drought, to the extent that we know them partially and temporarily.
The map 1 "Distribution of the population" presents the
Population density in the countryside and the numerical importance of cities, i.e. the human fact concerned by the drought.
Or The map 2 "Distribution and use of water" presents the facts in "normal" year. It is easy to deduce from these two maps the regions particularly affected by the lack of water.
Card 3 "Provisional balance sheet in May 1973; transport"
Presents the known and mappable facts concerning the effects of the drought as they appear on that date, after five years of worsening climatic conditions; it also presents the transport infrastructure that can be used for emergency supplies in disaster-stricken regions.
