Description of coin:

In 1926, 73.000.000 metallic drachmas were minted in 20-, 50-lepta and 1- and 2- drachma coins. Their sizes, in conformity to the standards of the Latin Monetary Union, were those of the 1868-dated coins. All four coins were alike in appearance: the obverse featured the head of Athena, in imitation of a design taken by a Corinthian coin, while the reverse was limited to the inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic) and the denomination. Those curponickel coins of 1926 were struck in Vienna.

The 50-lepta and the 1-dracha coins with the B above the year were minted on 1930.

In 1929 all King George coins are withdrawn by law. By the Decree of 7.8.1930 it was decided that new coins of 5-, 10-, and 20-drachma should be minted. The 5-drachma coins were made of nickel, and, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary since the circulation of Kapodistrias' coins, bore the phoenix theme designed by Michael Axelos and engraved by Kruger Gray.
