About the Artist: Barnabus Arnasungaaq (1924 – 2017)
Born in 1924 in Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq), Barnabus Arnasungaaq was a leading figure in contemporary Inuit sculpture, widely recognized for his remarkable contributions to Inuit art. He was an early participant in the Baker Lake carving program, which began in the 1960s. Throughout his career, Barnabus created not only a range of sculptures but also prints and drawings, though it is his sculptures that have made the most significant impact.
Barnabus exclusively carved using the hard black steatite stone found in the Kivalliq region, which resists fine detail and encourages a tactile, monumental quality. His preference for using simple hand tools allowed him to fully connect with the stone’s natural materiality. A mentor to many, he took his role seriously, encouraging other carvers to practice caution while working, despite his own disregard for safety masks and goggles, which he felt would obstruct his connection to the material.
His work has been featured in over 100 group and solo exhibitions across Canada, the United States, and internationally. His sculptures can be found in prominent collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the UBC Museum of Anthropology, and the National Gallery of Canada.
Barnabus Arnasungaaq’s enduring legacy in Inuit sculpture reflects his significant influence on both his community and the broader art world.
