Vintage Photo Engraving By Douglas Juleff

Fine Photo Galleries has recently acquired a large private collection of authentic vintage photo engravings by American photographer Douglas Juleff. Operating out of Detroit Michigan from 1945 to 1965, Juleff photographed local bodybuilders and athletes in classical type compositions, using his masterful lighting techniques to produce rich, sumptuous images of the male form.

The subject of this image is well known Detroit bodybuilder and physique model Mike Dubel. During the 1940's Dubel graced the covers of numerous health and bodybuilding magazines.

Douglas Juleff (American, 1917 - 1999) - Douglas Juleff was a nationally known and highly respected photographer in his field, turning out fine male physique studies from the mid 1940s until the mid 1960s. Today his prints are highly valued and collected, known for their rich dark tones and superb lighting.

In the late 1950s, the photographer was involved in a famous censorship battle waged in Detroit, Michigan that ultimately destroyed his career and the lives of many of his models. In the 1950's images of the male nude were banned under the law. The Detroit police ransacked Juleff's house, confiscating and burning a majority of the photographer's negatives and prints.

 PRINT SPECIFICATIONS

Beautifully printed, these commercially produced photo-lithographs were struck in the late 1980’s from Juleff's original negatives. These vintage prints have been professionally dry mounted onto conservation museum board with acid free materials and ready to place in a standard size frame.

Condition report/markings: beautiful impression, finely printed, full bleed (no border), excellent condition.
