Up for sale is a unique antique vesta case, dating from the early 20th century, and most likely originating from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically Karlsbad (modern-day Karlovy Vary, Bohemia).

This charming match safe/striker is crafted from a pewter alloy and designed in the form of a traditional folk costume shoe from the region—a delightful souvenir piece. It is painted in red enamel and decorated with a black and gold butterfly decal on the lid. The word "Karlsbad" is inscribed, highlighting its origin as a travel keepsake.

The shoe’s sole features a ribbed surface intended for striking matches. The piece also includes a hinged snap-shut lid to keep matches securely inside.

Condition:

Very good antique condition with minor wear to the paint, consistent with age and use. Please review all photos closely as they are part of the item description.

Provenance:

Discovered at an estate sale in Vienna. Though the full history is unknown, it came from the collection of a world traveler and antiques enthusiast.
