I love a collectible with a good story behind it. This helmet has one of the best. It was found in the garden of the Hartenstein Hotel located in Oosterbeek Holland. Hartenstein served as the headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. It is now an Airborne museum dedicated to the battle of Arnhem in which the allied forces attempted to form a bridgehead on the northern banks of the Rhine River. In the area around Arnhem, more than 10,000 men of the British 1st Airborne Division and the Glider Pilot Regiment landed north of the Lower Rhine. Major General Roy Urquhart chose Hartenstein as his headquarters. After holding out north of the Rhine for nine days, the division had to be withdrawn. Just over 2000 of the 10000 men who had landed were able to make it back to allied lines.
This helmet is in relic condition as shown. To me the value of it comes from being able to place it in a specific place during a small window of time during one of the greatest events of the 20th century. You can find WW2 helmets for sale but who knows where they have3 been. You know with this helmet.
