Summary from the DVD case's back cover:

The legend of King Artur has enchanted generation after generation. His pure, perfect kingdom was shattered because of the tragic passion of Queen Guenevere and the Round Table's bravest knight Lancelot. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe shaped that saga into the 1960 musical Camelot. Seven years later, the stage hit became a triple Academy Award winner with glowing performances by Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero and a glistening score. Experience anew the melodic romance of that "one brief, shining moment" known as Camelot.

A bit of film trivia, via IMDb:
  • In later years, Richard Harris bought the rights to the stage version of "Camelot" for $1 million, revamped the musical, and took it on tour. It made him a very rich man.
  • Julie Andrews was asked to reprise her stage role of Guenevere. She had become such a popular film star that she was unable to accept the role. Ironically, Jack L. Warner also produced the film version of My Fair Lady (1964). He cast Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle because he didn't think Andrews would be a big enough box-office name. Warner apologized to Andrews about the My Fair Lady casting, and the two became good friends. Andrews, ultimately, did not get to reprise her role, because Joshua Logan wanted Dame Vanessa Redgrave for the role.
  • Queen Guenevere's wedding dress was made from fishing nets. The bodice had little seashells sewn on, and hundreds of pumpkin seeds were hand-sewn onto the train.
  • Franco Nero's singing was dubbed by Gene Merlino of the group The Mellowmen Quartet.
  • The effect of Merlin's glowing eyes were accomplished through the use of mirrored contact lenses, their first use in a feature film. Optometrist Dr. Morton Greenspoon designed them and personally fitted them on actor Laurence Naismith.
  • The knights' armor in the film was brought to Hollywood from Spain, where it had been used in El Cid (1961). It was later rented to Walt Disney Pictures for Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971).
  • Joshua Logan chose Dame Vanessa Redgrave for Guinevere after seeing her in Morgan! (1966). He had to wait several months to get her because she was committed to a play in London, "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie".
  • After scouting various shooting locations, Joshua Logan decided not to film in England despite the many medieval castles there. According to his autobiography, "the castles in England are either in ruins or have modern additions, whereas Spain is filled with entire castles that were built in the Middle Ages." Eventually, Logan chose the castle at Coca, Spain for Camelot and the Alcazar in Segovia for Lancelot's fortress, Joyous Gard.
  • Marianne Faithfull, Liza Minnelli, and Petula Clark were considered for the role of Guenevere.
  • In the original musical, Merlin is lured away from Camelot by the spirit of Nimue, who sings the song "Follow Me." shortly after Arthur meets Guinevere. Nimue was dropped from the film and Merlin dropped from the meeting of Arthur and Guinevere. The song "Follow Me" with completely rewritten lyrics is sung by a chorus during the last of the scenes with Merlin. Pop singers have recorded both versions. Blondie's recording of "Follow Me" from their album "Autoamerican" uses the original lyrics from the stage version, while Frank Sinatra's recording uses the new lyrics used in the film.
  • Dame Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero met while making this film and soon afterwards (amidst many lurid headlines) had a child together. They also worked together in "A Quiet Place In The Country", and then in Letters to Juliet (2010), as lovers who found each other after years apart. They did not marry until 2006.
  • "The Seven Deadly Virtues," Mordred's song in the original musical, was eliminated from the film version.
  • Two separate medieval castles in Segovia, Spain, were used in this film. The Alcazar de Segovia, with its mansard roofs and numerous turrets reminiscent of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty's castle, was used for Sir Lancelot's home in Gaul (France). The opening and closing scenes were also filmed on the grounds of the castle. For Camelot itself, the Coca Castle, also in Segovia, was used in long shots and background shots to depict the towers and battlements of Arthur's legendary kingdom.
  • Richard Burton, who had played King Arthur on Broadway in the original 1960 production, was offered the role in the film. Burton won a 1961 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, but he turned the film down, a decision he would regret later on. Burton played King Arthur in a 1980 touring revival of "Camelot", to make up for his prior decision. He had to drop out in April 1981 due to ill health, and Richard Harris replaced him.
  • At one point, while filming on a Warner Brothers soundstage, Richard Harris and producer Jack L. Warner were at odds over how to do a scene. Warner took Harris out onto the studio lot, and showed him the famous water tower with the Warner Brothers logo on it. "What does that tower say, Richard?" asked Warner. Harris replied "It says 'Warner Brothers." "Right," said Warner. "Now when it says 'Harris Brothers', *then* we'll do it *your* way."
  • The Camelot Castle set was also used as Baskerville Hall in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1972) and as a Scottish ancestral home in McMillan & Wife (1971).
  • After filming wrapped, King Arthur's crown prop disappeared. When Richard Harris was asked if he knew where it was, he said that had no idea. Later, he appeared on the cover of Time magazine wearing it.
  • Included among the American Film Institute's 2004 list of 400 movies nominated for the top 100 America's Greatest Music in the Movies for the song "Camelot."
