Indonesian Batik has created its own unique world because of its delicate technique and colourful patterns, and along with Indian Batik, it is a world-leading dyeing technique. In Japan, it has been cherished as Java Batik from ancient time and has a long history of being used in costumes, the matting of calligraphic paintings and tea ceremony accessories. Japanese Batik was adopted at the time when Java was governed by Japan. Java Batik patterns were adopted into the Yuzen design. Hence it has been associated greatly with the dyeing and weaving cultures of Japan. The exhibition and catalogue genealogically introduced colourful Java Batik with the full cooperation of Eiko Adnan Kusuma whose collection is known to be the most genealogized. There are approximately 150 superb pieces chosen out of several thousand.
