DESCRIPTION:
In 1898, Frank A. Rinehart, the Premier portrait photographer in Omaha, was afforded the opportunity to photograph these Indians. The occasion was the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. A studio was constructed on the fairgrounds and Mr. Rinehart was appointed official photographer.
From the original glass plate negatives, these reproductions you see presented were developed. Please appreciate that the original negatives were made but a few years after the Battle of the Little Big Horn and The Wounded Knee Massacre, and that a number of Indians in this collection of Rinehart's were participants in these historic occasions. The tremendous detail of the portraits, taken at a time when photography was in its infancy, is attributed to the genuine skills of Mr. Rinehart and to the fact that the portraits were made under studio conditions.
