Polybern is an amber-like gemstone artificially produced in the GDR that consists of yellow polyester and amber pieces or powder. The name is a portmanteau of the names polyester resin and amber. Polybern was produced by VEB Ostseeschmuck primarily in the 1970s, when the then Soviet Union massively restricted its amber deliveries. At times, Polybern was also sold under the trade name Bernit.

Polybern has a higher specific density than real amber (mainly between 1.21 and 1.27, but also significantly less with a higher amber content). The refractive index of 1.53 is identical to that of natural amber. If you scratch the surface of polybern with a steel needle, a smooth scratch furrow is created; the chips are easily removable. With natural amber, splinters and a correspondingly chipped scratch furrow are formed.
