Up for sale is an exceptional late 18th century painting depicting a group of individuals surrounding a bear in a muzzle. This "Dancing Bear" is after the famous British painter Henry William Bunbury who painted the work in the late 18th century. This period painting is executed in watercolor on paper and appears to date to the same period. Many engravings and etchings were reproduced during this time so it is unknown to me whether this work was competently copied from a print or a type of study by Bunbury of which the finished oil painting was sold at Christies back in the late 1990's. The artwork is indeed well executed and highly attractive showing this rather unbelievable form of entertainment. The work does not bear any signature which is common for the artist. The condition of this watercolor shows minimal soiling, toning and foxing while imperfections are present to the sheets edge. This watercolor appearing to be late 18th century has been laid down to an old heavy watercolor paper in the 19th century. Frame is damaged with loss to gold gesso. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine antique "Dancing Bear" painting after Henry Bunbury but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
