The artwork “Radial II” by Brian Rice is a rare proof silkscreen print, created in 1967. Measuring 14 x 13.5 inches, this piece showcases a harmonious and striking composition of geometric abstraction. It features a circular design split into two hemispheres, dominated by soft blue tones, interspersed with dynamic bursts of angular yellow and white forms radiating from the center. This signed artist’s proof is labeled “H/C” (Hors Commerce) in pencil, denoting its exclusivity as a print not intended for sale in the original commercial edition. The minimal yet bold interplay of color and shape exemplifies Rice’s affinity for modernist abstraction and his exploration of form and movement. During the 1960s Brian Rice produced luminous, hard edged abstract paintings and prints, which achieved national and international publicity and acclaim, and quickly found their way into international collections. The roots of inspriration lay not in the 50s and 60s icons of the ‘Pop’ era but rather more in the De Stijl and European Constructivists of the 20s and 30s. However by the mid 1970s disillusioned by both his output and the general art world, he retreated to the West Country and concentrated on his farming and his teaching.
