Browningia candelaris seeds grow into the candle cactus — a majestic, tree-like, candelabra-branching cactus native to the desert and dry shrubland biome of Peru. The genus Browningia honours Webster E. Browning (1869–1942), Director of the Instituto Inglés, Santiago, Chile. The epithet candelaris means 'candle-like' (from Latin candela = candle), referring to the tall, upright, candelabra-branching form. Produces a blue-grey waxy trunk to 6 m; the lower trunk is heavily spined while the upper branches have reduced spination in the reproductive zone; large nocturnal white flowers; two subspecies are recognised: subsp. candelaris and subsp. icaensis (from the Ica region).
