Species: Megalosauridae indet.

Formation: Irhazer Group

Location: Agadez, Niger

Age: 168-165 mya, Jurassic

This is an authentic megalosaurid tooth from the Irhazer Group of Niger. This tooth has a cool pathology in the form of a bifurcated split mesial carina. It’s very possible that this tooth came from Afrovenator, but Afrovenator is currently only described in the Tiourarén Formation. Since it is so difficult to tell whether these Jurassic aged Nigerien teeth are from the Irhazer Shale or the Tiourarén Formation, it’s best to call this an indeterminate megalosaurid, though future discoveries may show that the Irhazer Shale megalosaurid was also Afrovenator. There is no restoration or repair on this specimen.
