Suzuki writes that Bust of an Athlete “began as an innocuous date at the Getty Villa, which has an extensive amount of queer Ancient Greek artwork. Some poems, such as ‘Attic Red-Figure Eu- rymedon’ and the string of poems titled ‘Bust of an Athlete,’ are explicitly inspired by pieces displayed. I wanted to create a chapbook that encapsulates the structure of walk- ing through a museum, observing memories, and desiring someone from the past. The feelings and artifacts are still there, but now the opportunities have all nearly faded. I wanted to show my pain, frustration, eroticism, nostalgia, and desire in ways that could be linked to the world outside of myself.”
