The company was founded in 1784 by the gardener Heinrich Mette . That year Mette leased the Dechaneigarten of the Quedlinburg Abbey. He ran a horticultural seed cultivation at least from 1792. After the end of World War II , the company was expropriated without compensation in the Soviet zone of occupation in 1945. The operation went on in the state-run German Saatzucht Gesellschaft but closed by the time of deoccupation.
