Rembrandt van Rijn “Titus as a Monk” Reproduction With Frame Carved By Bernard Lankers

We purchased this Titus as a Monk framed picture at auction while traveling in Germany in 1983

The painting is a reproduction of a famous work titled "Titus as a Monk" by the renowned Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn that was created around 1660.

History and Significance:

This painting is a portrait of Rembrandt's son, Titus, depicted as a young monk. It is considered one of Rembrandt's most intimate and personal works. The painting showcases Rembrandt's masterful use of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and drama. The subject matter, a young man contemplating his future, resonates with viewers and invites introspection.

The gold leafed frame was carved by Bernhard Lankers, very well known today as a specialist in the German Rococo style, and especially in the Berlin-Brandenburg style.  The Berlin-Brandenburg style is called ‘Friderizianisches Rokoko’ or, in short, the style of Frederick II.    It is expressed with great virtuosity, but is also notable for its powerful, subtle and sensitive form.  Bernard sourced his gold leaf used in the frame from the Berlin, Germany manufacturer Die Goldleistenfabrik.

As a freelance wood sculptor, Bernhard Lankers works in all areas of historical reconstruction and conservation, with a focus on interior decorative schemes and carved wooden frames. He has worked in various palaces and museums throughout Germany, including the picture gallery in Sanssouci Palace, Charlottenburg Palace, Castle Rheinsberg, The Bode Museum, and has recently been involved with the rebuilding of the Berlin Palace on Museuminsel.
