ANNALS OF THE LOWELL OBSERVATORY-Volume I

1898 publication nicely rebound in heavy buckram; 21 plates. Near fine condition.

Description: Percival Lowell ANNALS OF THE LOWELL OBSERVATORY: VOLUME 1--Observations of the Planet Mars During the Opposition of 1894-5 Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1898, 10.5 x 12 in., 391 pp. 21 plates including drawings of the planet and maps.

Condition: Hardbound in new green buckram with gilt title on spine. "Withdrawn" stamp on bottom page edges. Otherwise clean, tightly bound, crisp, and unmarked inside and out. Plates are clean and bright. Near fine condition.

Information: One of the rarest of Lowell's publications on Mars (there were 3 volumes of the Annals published; I have not yet listed the other two). This contains general notes on his telescopes and techniques and records of observations of features and changes in the appearance of Mars during its close approach in the 1894-5 opposition. It also contains a hundred pages or so of observations of the dark regions and terminator of Mars by A.E. Douglass.   Extremely hard to find edition, especially in this great condition---it was originally bound in light wraps, and has been rebound in heavy buckram for durability.
Biographical Note: Percival Lowell (1855 – 1916) was an American businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars, and furthered theories of a ninth planet within the Solar System. He founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death.
