Description
The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE), also known as the "Little Giant", was a small railroad that connected Pittsburgh, PA with Youngstown, OH. It was called the "Little Giant" because the tonnage it hauled was well out of proportion to its size - it served steel mills and carried not only finished steel product but also coal, ores, limestone and ingots. Formed in 1873, it was at varying times controlled by the New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail. It became independent after Conrail was broken up between CSX and Norfolk Southern, although it operated as a separate entity. CSX gained control of the P&LE in 1993.
