The Rhode Island Tuna Tournament (RITT) was a nationally-famous sport fishing event that ran from 1958 to 1997. The tournament was held annually on Labor Day Weekend in Galilee, Rhode Island, and featured:

• Giant bluefin tuna

• Luxury sport fishing boats

• Anglers

• A boat parade

The RITT was one of the world's largest and most prestigious saltwater fishing events. Here are some highlights from the tournament's history: 

 

Hurricane Carol: In 1954, Hurricane Carol canceled the tournament after sinking or damaging 24 of the 77 registered boats. 

 The Splendid Splinter: In 1961, Ted Williams caught a 557-pound tuna at the tournament. 

Decline in giant bluefin tuna: The popularity of sushi led to a decline in the number of giant bluefin tuna, which in turn led to the end of the tournament.
