Seconde edition, so stated, demy folio (16.75 x 10.75 inches), pp. (6) half-title, title, instructions for binders, 1-6 order of the plates, 1-14 list of the plates, (2) table of subjects, followed by plates numbered 1-236 including 12 double page, this copy lacking #s 115, 122, 126. (The title page advertises 248 plates which is the result of adding the second page of the 12 double plates to the 236 numbered plates, i.e. 248 single pages of plates).
The first edition in 17 volumes published in Paris 1751-65 is Printing and the Mind of Man entry #200.
Original full vellum, smooth back with red leather gilt lettering piece, all edges red.
Attractive and unusual full vellum original binding with professional repair to lowest section of the spine extending to the lower inner corners of the sides, light natural wear otherwise to edges, corners and extremities, side with some soil and rubs. Preliminary sheets with lower inner corner stain extending through the first five sheets then quickly diminishing at plate #4 and then mostly clear; rear sheets with inner corner stain from the endpapers and last plate #236 diminishing back to plate #195 and then mostly clean to plate 118 where inner corner stain shows again diminishing back to plate 88 where clear again back to the early plates. Plates mostly clean with minor spots or stains, no serious defects, good margins. Front free endpaper with 1.25-inch x 4.25-inch piece torn away where the inner corner stain is. This copy lacks three plates #'s 114, 121 and 126. There is A 2-inch x 2 inch engraved heraldic bookplate with rampant lion and shield on the front paste down endpaper "Bibliotheca Giuliari".
