The crusades of the Middle Ages were military expeditions organized by the Church for the deliverance of the Holy Land. They were preached by the pope, by a spiritual authority of the Christian West like Bernard of Clairvaux, or by a sovereign like Frederic Barbarossa. They were launched to regain access to places of Christian pilgrimage in the Holy Land, authorized by the Abbasid Arabs, but prohibited by the Seljuk Turks in 1071 when they took Jerusalem from the Arabs. They began in 1095, also responding to a request from the emperor of the East worried about the attitude of the Turks. The Eastern Romans (called "Byzantine" since the 16th century) spoke Greek, were Christians, but remained attached to the Pentarchy and did not recognize Rome's primacy since the Filioque quarrel in 1054 (separation of the Eastern Churches and of the West). The Crusaders made no lasting conquests, lost interest in the matter once Saladin restored access to pilgrimages except for those who had settled there, and ultimately weakened the Christians of the East more than they didn't help them. The first crusade began in 1095 with thousands of pilgrims on foot, to reoccupy part of the land lost during the Arab expansion of the 9th century, and thus make Jerusalem accessible to pilgrimage. It resulted in the foundation of the Latin States of the East, the defense of which justified the other seven main crusades, from 1147 to 1291, the date of the loss of the last Latin positions in the East. From the fourth crusade, which seized Constantinople in 1204, the idea is sometimes misguided: expeditions are organized by the pope against his Christian opponents (Albigensians, Hohenstaufen, Aragon or even Hussites in the 15th century…) or pagans (Baltic). If they allow the maintenance of the Latin States of the East, the crusades no longer have Jerusalem as their objective.
