this is a wonderful vintage Folk Art oil painting of the steamship "Hartford" which sailed up & down the Connecticut River from approx.1899 until 1931 making this ship the last steamer to ply the Connecticut River - there are a number of antique real photo post cards which depict this steamship in action on the river- by 1931, residents who wanted to take a trip to cities south of Hartford simply took the trains that were less expensive & allowed for quicker trips to all destinations that were also serviced by the steamship "Hartford" - probably the most famous painting of the "Hartford" was done by the gifted artist Antonio Jacobsen in 1915 which today would probably sell for $8,000 - $10,000 -
this Folk Art style painting was done probably c.1950's by an unknown but talented artist who depicted the "Hartford" sailing slowly down the Connecticut River on a gorgeous summer day - the steamer was painted in an off-white color with an orange stripe running from bow to stern - in the middle of the ship are the black twin smokestacks, & on the stern the American flag flies -up in front of the pilot's cabin are some members of the crew taking in the beautiful summer day -
what really makes the steamer stand out in this painting is the depiction of the bright blue sky interspersed with fluffy off-white clouds contrasted with the very calm surface of the Connecticut river & its wonderful reflections of the steamer as it moves slowly down the river towards its destination - the painting measures 16" x 20" sight size, & is in very good vintage condition - it is well-enhanced by its replaced wooden frame which measures 22" x 26", & is also in very good condition - note the gilded inner section of the frame which also makes the "Hartford" stand out to the viewer - this is a very unusual one of a kind type of painting which would look great in a man's den or office - this painting can be picked up at my home in Swanzey, NH to save on shipping cost -
