Sapphire along with Ruby is a member of the Corundum mineral family. The presence of Iron in Corundum creates blue Sapphire and of Chromium gives red Ruby. After Diamond Corundum family members are the next hardest of all precious gemstones.
As well as blue, Sapphire can also be found in yellow, green, an orange pink and indeed colourless.
