Centranthus ruber seeds grow into the red valerian or Jupiter's beard — a perennial herb native to the temperate biome of the Mediterranean, from Portugal and Spain east through southern France, Italy and the Balkans to Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean. Described by Linnaeus and transferred to Centranthus by de Candolle. The epithet ruber means 'red', referring to the typically crimson-red flowers. One of the most carefree and ornamentally valuable Mediterranean perennials — self-seeds prolifically in walls, cliff faces and rocky ground, creating natural drifts of crimson, deep pink or white flowers from late spring through autumn. Flowers attract butterflies and bees. Young shoots edible. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Family Caprifoliaceae (formerly Valerianaceae).

Full sun; well-drained to dry, poor, preferably alkaline soils; warm temperate Mediterranean conditions; drought-tolerant. Self-seeds freely in walls and crevices. Excellent wildlife plant.
