The WOOD BADGE: A Brief History
The Wood Badge is a training
program for Scouters initially developed by Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell
in 1919. The training was held at
Gilwell Park in the UK and has been adapted by other Scouting organizations
worldwide ever since. This international
acceptance was formally acknowledged in 1924 at the World Conference in
Copenhagen.
There are a number of items that have been
used worldwide to recognize the completion of Wood Badge training. They are the leather Turk’s Head Woggle,
Wood Beads on a leather lace necklace and the Scarf /Necker with
a rectangular piece of Maclaren tartan at the apex. The Axe and Log Totem is yet another
symbol long associated with Wood Badge training.
Upon completion of the Wood Badge training
Scouters become members of the 1st Gilwell Scout Group or Gilwell
Troop 1 and are known as Wood Badgers or Gilwellians.
I proudly joined this group many decades
ago. (I was not quite certain what I was getting into. For sure it was NOT one
hour a week.) If you are looking at this
listing, I presume you probably are a member as well. The history of The Wood Badge and the
various items associated with it have always been an important part of my
collecting passion for Boy Scout memorabilia.

Gilwell Park and Axe in Log Symbol
Gilwell Park Gilwell Park is a camp site and activity centre in East London. The 109-acre (44 ha) site is owned by The Scout Association is used by Scouting and Guiding groups. As the original base of leadership training in the Scout movement, it is an important site of the worldwide Scouting movement.
Axe in the Log Symbol The
symbol of the axe in the log is associated with feudalism that
was instituted after the invasion and conquest of England by William the
Conqueror. Within Scouting the axe-and-log logo was
conceived by Francis Gidney in the early 1920s to distinguish Gilwell Park from
the Scout Headquarters. He wanted to associate Gilwell Park with the
outdoors and scoutcraft rather than the business
and administrative headquarters offices. At Wood Badge courses, axe blades were
masked for safety by being buried in a log. Seeing this, Gidney chose the
axe-and-log as the totem of Gilwell Park. This logo came to be strongly
associated with Wood Badge leader training and is still used on
certificates, flags and other items.
Passionate about District / Area / Region Badges?
The trading & collecting of district
badges have been a MAJOR focus of collectors of Scout memorabilia for
a long time. Youth and leaders alike
attending Scouting Jamborees and other such events have traded such badges for
decades. Vintage camp blankets were typically interspersed with these
treasures.
This is one Scout collectible that I
have never fully understood and do not collect. That being said, the length and
breadth of this collectible is amazing.
Please check our other listings or our eBay store for other surplus
items from my collection or items consigned to us. Lots of deals on badges from across Canada.
Great to add to your collection, for trading or for your CAMP blanket.
The Canadian Badgers Memorabilia Club (CBMC)
I am very thankful for all the
resources available from this organization for help in understanding and
identifying DISTRICT and other such badges used in Canada, on many listings I
have included the coding, the rarity rating and some of the information found
in the CBC catalogue, however please carefully review the image and ask any questions about a
badge just in case I have missed something or mis-identified a badge variation,
consider joining this Club for full access to all of the resources
