Original wood engraving.  Date: c.1540-1552.  Latin text within engraved borders verso.  First or very early edition.  Sheet size: 38.8cm x 30.7cm.  Ptolemaic map of ancient Sarmatia located northeast of the Black Sea by the famous mapmaker Sebastian Munster.  Map shows the European part of Russia and the Baltic Regions, from Scandinavia to the Black Sea with the peninsula Krim.  The highly decorative wood engraving to the verso was probably cut by Hans Holbein.  Later hand-colouring with good, wide margins.  In near fine, clean condition.
