LEWIS A. SWIFT (1820-1913)SIGNED CARD, “Lewis Swift Ph.D. F.R.A.S./Echo Mountain Cal./June18, 1894”, on a card 3 x 2.25, by the American astronomer who discovered 13 comets and 1248 previously uncatalogued nebulae. Patent medicine king H. H. Warner offered to build an observatory for Swift if the local townspeople would raise the money for a 16” refractor telescope. In1882 the Warner Observatory opened the doors with Swift as Director. But in the financial panic of 1893 his benefactor, Warner, went bankrupt and Swift was then invited by Thaddeus Lowe to become director of the Mount Lowe Observatory, on top of Echo Mountain in southern California, until his retirement in 1900. The card is boldly signed and dated and is in fine condition, with minor age toning.   #12574
