The boy is running away from home, but he stops in to the local diner for something to eat. The boy will be in his own bed tonight, thinking it was his own choice, not knowing that the officer and short-order cook will convince the boy that things aren't really so bad at home. Rockwell captures this scenario perfectly. Although (not the fault of individual Officers), a stark contrast from when the policeman was a trusted member of the community, as opposed to the image of the rogue law enforcement "authorities" of today, that do not represent the vast majority of past, present, or future Officers.
