Up for auction/sale is an oddly beautiful and unique multi-color soapstone carving of the devil (or someone equally as evil looking), who appears to be surrounded by a group of wicked animals with highly detailed bodies. I find no artists markings, but whoever carved this had a wonderful imagination and blended the natural colors expertly into the scene.
Being a Bernie Wrightson fan, I have always had a great appreciation for artists who can bring the macabre out of a medium, and this artist had an exceptional talent. They also fully attached a metal head (Spelter, I believe) to the carved soapstone section having a very devilish gold-toned grimace accompanied by horns and lengthy fangs.
This 7 1/2 tall, 4 3/4" wide, 2 1/4" (front to back) soapstone carving is in exceptional condition having no chips or cracks, or repairs and weighs in at 1lb, 13oz. The metal head has a few "silvered" spots in the gold-tone, but is otherwise in excellent condition, firmly attached to the body and gorgeously gruesome.
I have described this piece as best I can, but to augment my description I have provided several high-resolution images of this carving from varying angles to allow for a detailed review of quality, condition, and desirability.
This will be packaged with care to best ensure this strangely beautiful and unique soapstone carving arrives as pictured and described.
