Primrose is one of our best loved wildflowers, the pale yellow, scented blooms appearing in early spring.
Both leaves and flowers are edible and the flowers can also be used to make wine.
It is fairly adaptable but prefers light shade and moisture retentive, though well drained soil.
The name Primrose comes from the Latin Prima Rosa meaning 'first rose' a reference to its early blooming, though in fact it is not a rose nor closely related to the rose family.
Many cultivars have been bred from common primrose though few match the species for beauty.

Many plants will germinate better with the help of Ga3 which is widely available on Ebay and elsewhere.
DORMANCY - Many tree, shrub and conifer seeds and some perennial seeds have a natural period of dormancy. This is a natural process which ensures the seeds do not germinate till conditions suit, usually in the spring. The natural dormancy of the seed can be broken by a period of stratification. This will be explained in the instructions supplied with the seed. This may require some patience but you will be rewarded with lots of plants at minimal cost. It is possible to create a box, yew or beech hedge for just a few pounds!
