BULGARIA JAMES BOURCHIER IRISH JOURNALIST 'THE TIMES' SOUTH SHETLANDS 1921


 

Interesting set of stamps commemorating the passing of James Bourchier who was born in Limerick in 1850 and studied at Trinity College Dublin where he was elected a scholar in Classics in 1871.

Bouchier was The Times Balkan correspondent and lived in Sofia, Bulgaria from 1892 to 1915. Bourchier is noted by the Bourchier Peak on Rila Mountain; James Borchier Boulavard and Metro Station in Sofia and Bourchier Cove on Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica all of which are named after him. Bourchier was sympathetic to the Bulgarian people and after his death was buried near Rila Monastery in South West Bulgaria. There are thee sets of stamps affixed to piece from the archives of the Madagasian Post Office overstruck by large' POSTES ET TELEGRAPHES/MADAGASCAR/CONECTION DE BERNE' handstamps in red.
